Jorge Sampaoli’s side are desperate for a win having gone four qualifiers without any of their players scoring from open play.. Argentina are in fifth place on 24 points in the South American qualification table.
That position would see them enter a two-legged playoff against New Zealand – an embarrassing inconvenience, but not a disaster. Peru are the team currently occupying the last qualifying place on goals scored. Then a place below Argentina, Chile are set to miss out on the World Cup as things stand.
Only a win at home to Peru and away to Ecuador would guarantee qualification for Lionel Messi and co. A win over Peru, followed by a draw in Quito would see Argentina qualify providing Chile failed to beat both Ecuador at home and Brazil away.
A draw against Peru would mean Argentina would then have to beat Ecuador by more goals than any Peruvian win at home to Colombia to finish above them. And a loss against Peru would mean even a win over Ecuador could see Jorge Sampaoli’s side eliminated, depending on how Chile perform.
