UEFA to use VAR in Champions League from next season

UEFA has confirmed that they will be using Video Assistant Refrees (VAR) from the next season of Champions League.

The VAR will also be used in Europa League followed by 2019 UEFA Super Cup, Euro Cup 2020 and UEFA Nations League finals in 2021.

The VAR was used in this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia which gave a successful outcome. Many decisions were reversed with the use of the VAR in the World Cup to make the game fair.

“We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement. The VAR is currently used in most of Europe’s top leagues, including La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Portugal’s Primeira Liga.
